Upcoming Webinars & Events:

Which Programs to Learn for the Art Department

Our webinar session with Supervising Art Director James Lewis on which programs to learn for the Art Department was one of our most popular. We've compiled a page of notes summarising what James said in key points. You can read the notes here.

Webinar: Hold Your Rate

Thankyou to everyone who attended the webinar that we ran with Bectu and the BFDG about holding your rate. We had a great panel of committee members from the Art Department, Props, Construction and Lighting Technicians Bectu branches. It was particularly useful to hear how Construction and the Lighting Technicians had achieved a recognised rate card, and to consider how other departments can follow suit. We'll be putting out notes from the webinar, along with some key ways we can move forward and plans for the months ahead. Keep an eye on our socials!

Filmbase Sessions

Upcoming webinars & events for members

We hold regular webinars, including lunchtime Filmbase Sessions for our New to the Industry members, with top tips on how to get started in the industry. We also hold networking events throughout the year.

Partnerships

Working with industry suppliers

We are delighted to partner with the following companies as part of our Corporate Partnership Programme. We are grateful for the support of our partners, which enables us to run webinars and events for Filmbase members throughout the year and to develop the site to support crew further.

BGI Supplies is a specialist Prop and SFX manufacturing workshop and we are delighted that they are partnering with Filmbase for 2023-2024. BGI design and build incredible structures of all sizes for the film and TV industry. Everything from full-scale replica vehicles such as B52 bombers or small scale props, in their engineering and fabrication workshop. Typically working with art departments in an advisory and consultancy capacity, BGI produce engineering drawings, run FEA testing and build structures as close as possible to the initial vision. We’ve had a tour of their workshop and their impressive lineup of machines, including three KUKA 7-axis robotic arms that are used for 3D pattern machining for moulding and 2D routing on a variety of materials. Their work has most recently been seen in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (the entire train!) and Dune (many of the vehicles, including the ornithopters). BGIsupplies.co.uk

We are excited to partner with The Classic Prop Hire Company, one of the leading prop hire groups for the UK film and TV industry. Classic has an incredible range of props, from the medieval era through to the 1980s. The company also incorporates Seasons Textiles, Classic Modern, Number Eight and Classic Set Dec Shop, which each has its own specialist area. This partnership is a fantastic opportunity for Filmbase to continue to improve our services, and we couldn't be more excited to work alongside The Classic Prop Hire Company to make this happen. Classic will be supporting Filmbase by hosting and helping organise exciting webinars and in-person events for Art, Set Dec and Props Department crew, starting with our Set Dec Summit in October 2023. We'll let you know details of more collaborative projects soon! Classicprophire.com

Filmbase is delighted to be partnering with Compuhire for 2023/24. Compuhire is your go-to company for any scene involving a screen - and what is shown on that screen. If you’ve seen Star Wars: the Rise of Skywalker, No Time to Die, or The Matrix Resurrections, to name just three, then you’ll know Compuhire’s incredible motion graphics capabilities. Compuhire is experienced in working with all budgets - low-end and high-end - and all departments, from pre-production through to shooting and post-production. Compuhire has a huge range of modern and period computer props to hire. Whatever you want to show on those screens, the company’s creative arm, Studio C Design, can craft bespoke, state-of-the-art visual effects for you. On-set, Compuhire’s team is there to ensure playback is smooth. Compuhire is going to be working with us on a number of projects over the year and has already been behind our online yoga sessions, which proved very popular! Compuhire.com and studiocdesign.tv

Data Reprographics is a long-standing specialist printed props company for the Film and TV industry, and is joining Filmbase as a partner for 2023-2024. With the support of Data Reprographics, we will be able to plan more support webinars for Filmbase members over the next 12 months and increase our service for crew. Established in 1986, Data Reprographics has become the go-to provider for large-format printing, props and signage and one of the few companies that can print on newsprint for all those hero newspapers! The team has expanded over the years, and have a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as a willingness to explore new techniques and provide an ever-increasing range of services. They are also always happy to explore printing on a range of substrates, from fabric and all kinds of papers, to papyrus for films set in ancient Egypt! Collaborations

Working with industry organisations

We are pleased to work with a number of industry organisations on various issues, in order to support crew members.

BECTU is the trade union that fights for fair working conditions and professional standards for everyone in the UK film and TV industry, including the Art, Set Dec and Props Departments. Whilst Filmbase focuses on getting our members jobs, and helping employers find crew, BECTU's aim is to protect workers when they are on those jobs, to negotiate contracts and produce rate cards for crew members. We often work with BECTU to host webinars and work on issues that affect crew members.

You can find out more about joining BECTU here.

The Art Department Branch of BECTU also has its own website

The Film and TV Charity have kindly joined us for webinars and events focused on issues within the industry, and we are very happy to support its work. If you work behind the scenes in film, TV or cinema, the Film and TV Charity is here to support you. Whether you’re a researcher or a writer, in casting or production, editing or sales, distribution or exhibition, you can expect a friendly ear at the end of the charity's 24/7 Film and TV Support Line, as well as access to financial advice and support, help with mental wellbeing, including free counselling, and a host of other practical tools and resources. The charity also offers a Bullying Advice Service, providing one-to-one confidential advice. Alongside this, the charity offers bespoke advice for employers and employees on the steps they can take when faced with bullying and harassment.
